Second years were allowed to pick a cognomen and third years a praenomen so that by the time you hit forth year you could pick a forth name to tack on and be able to strut around like you were a fancy pants. I took Aurora to start with but it never felt quite right so when my second year rolled around I took Nix as my cognomen because my english last name is Snow and they're equivalent in latin. Come third year I added 'scelesta' which means 'wicked, abominable, or unfortunate' because I was at a particularly low point in my life and to be perfectly honest I have a tendency to be a trickster. After that point my teacher never called me Aurora again, it was always 'Scelesta this' or 'Scelesta that' and I was way more comfortable with it~ Years later I still go by Nix and when my teacher contacts me on FB (we keep in touch for special holidays like the Ides of March and Saturnalia) she always calls me Scelesta and it makes me smile evertime~"
